As we inch closer to the spine-tingling season of Halloween, we’ve uncovered what truly terrifies Britons in 2023. Not only have we unveiled the UK's most haunting Halloween horrors, but we've also come up with some spooktacular tips to help you transform these fears into decorations that will send shivers down your spine.
Fear #1: Spiders
Spiders have scuttled their way to the top of the fear ladder in the UK, with an astonishing 24% of Brits admitting to arachnophobia. If you're looking to spook your Halloween guests with this common fear, here's how to do it:
Webby wonderland:Drape your home with realistic spider webs. You can use white webbing or decorative black spiderweb material to achieve that eerie effect. For added shock value, place a few lifelike spider decorations throughout your web-covered space.
Creepy crawly crafts: Host a spider-themed crafting session with friends or family. Create oversized, terrifying spiders from black balloons and black pipe cleaners. Hang these menacing arachnids throughout your home.
Fear #2: Vomit
Surprisingly, vomiting takes second place on our list of fears, with 10% of people dreading the sight. Turning this fear into decoration is certainly unconventional, but it can be quite the scare.
Gory goodies:Serve snacks and drinks in sick-worthy tableware and containers that resemble "puke buckets." For those with a strong stomach, you could also make your own vomit-inspired cocktails. Just make sure they're edible and not too convincing!
Vomit-inducing sounds:Invest in a motion-activated sound device that plays vomit noises when someone approaches. Place it strategically near your party area for unexpected shocks.
Fear #3: Ghosts
Ghosts are a timeless fear, haunting 9% of Brits. To create an eerie and ghostly ambience for your Halloween party, consider these tips:
Ghostly projections:Use projectors to cast ghostly images on walls and surfaces. Or create ethereal shadows on the walls by placing candles in front of twig trees and ghost shapes to create your own spooky scenes.
Floating ghosts: Hang ethereal, white, and billowy ghost decorations from the ceiling to simulate floating spirits. Add glow-in-the-dark touches for an otherworldly effect.
Remember that regional variations exist in the UK, so you may want to tailor your decorations to match the fears of your local community for the ultimate Halloween horror factor. The bravest Brits that will take the most spooking this Halloween live in the East of England- almost a quarter (22%) had no fears so you should go all out on decorations here! On a city level, Nottingham was home to the hardest-to-spook Brits followed closely by Glasgow and Norwich with 22%, 21% and 20% respectively allegedly having no phobias. On the flipside, Brits with the biggest nervous disposition for Halloween horrors live in Belfast, Liverpool and Sheffield.
